Nutrition, Family Services, & WIC

Seattle Indian Health Board provides care and services to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women and their children by sharing our knowledge and providing support to mothers in a culturally appropriate way as they begin their journeys to raise the next generation of healthy children.

Services

WIC

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a public health nutrition program for income-eligible women who are pregnant or post-partum, infants, and children up to age five. WIC provides nutrition and breastfeeding support, nutritious foods, and referrals for health and social services. The WIC program at SIHB also provides IBCLC (lactation support) services.

Income eligibility

Families are eligible for WIC if their household income is less than 185% of the federal poverty level, comparable to Medicaid’s income guidelines.

Breast pumps

We offer free breast pumps to WIC clients to support their breastfeeding efforts post-delivery. A variety of manual and electric pumps are provided, along with instruction, after WIC staff have assessed their needs.

Nutrition

Medical Nutrition Therapy is available to all relatives through individual nutrition counseling appointments for a variety of conditions/disease states including diabetes, hypertension, malnutrition, obesity, GI disorders, food allergies, addiction, and pregnancy.

Perinatal Services

We provide individual case management including access to Medicaid, Food Stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and childcare as well as referrals to prenatal care, housing, baby items, classes, and other social services.

Perinatal lunch and breastfeeding group have been suspended temporarily due to COVID-19.
