Unique Features

The Pacific Northwest region has one of the largest urban Indian populations in the Western United States. Urban Indian health issues are often challenging to both patients and their physicians. Throughout the program, SIHB Family Medicine residents learn to address the challenges our patients face, particularly the need for coordinated services in a culturally appropriate manner.

SIHB’s Family Medicine Residency Program offers unique opportunities for residents:

  • A multi-cultural and multi-tribal patient population.

  • In-house dental, nutrition, mental health, pharmacy, outpatient chemical dependency, and domestic violence services.

  • Thunderbird Treatment Center, an in-patient chemical dependency facility.

  • Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI), a national epidemiology and research center on urban Indian health.

  • Required rotations in rural Indian health settings.

  • Traditional medicine curriculum.

  • Contact with the SIHB Traditional Health Liaison.
