Overview

The Seattle Indian Health Board (SIHB) Family Medicine Residency Program is a 3-year, ACGME-approved training experience for those considering careers in a non-profit health care setting with
a special emphasis on Indian health. In fact, the SIHB Family Medicine Residency is the only program in the country which offers focused training in the care of American Indians and Alaska Natives. SIHB operates as a satellite continuity site to the Swedish/Providence Family Medicine Residency Program.

The SIHB residency program prepares family physicians for careers in Indian health care, particularly in tribal Indian Health Service (IHS) and urban Indian health facilities. The residency program offers opportunities to train American Indians, Alaska Natives, and others in the health profession for service to Indian people. Training is provided in an environment designed to address the unique cultural and health problems faced by American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Drawing upon the extensive experience and diversity of SIHB faculty, staff and employees, residents have unique opportunities to learn about Indian health, including participation in community outreach and collaboration with traditional health practitioners.

The residency is part of the University of Washington's Regional Family Medicine Network, which has been repeatedly rated number 1 for primary care by US News and World Report. Attending physicians are board-certified and hold appointments as clinical faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Instruction is augmented with additional SIHB health care professionals and traditional Native healing mentors.

The SIHB medical clinic is located just blocks from downtown Seattle and is less than one mile from the Swedish/Providence Family Medicine main campus.
