LaVerne Wise Honored by Native Action Network with Enduring Spirit Award

LaVerne Wise (Tlingit), our Community and Board Liaison, received the Enduring Spirit Award from the Native Action Network Native Women's Leadership Forum on June 2, 2017. The Enduring Spirit Award recognizes Native women who have committed time, energy and volunteerism to improving the health of Native communities over a lifetime. LaVerne has given 30 years of service to Seattle Indian Health Board and a lifetime of service to Alaska Native and America Indian communities around the U.S. We are so thankful to have such a strong, amazing Tlingit woman working alongside us, guiding us with her wisdom and lifting us up through every step of our journey. Our CEO, Esther Lucero calls LaVerne our Director of Happiness. 

LaVerne was honored at a special award ceremony at the 13th Annual Native Women's Leadership Forum and Enduring Spirit Honoring Luncheon. Other notable honorees this year included, Laverne Lane (Lummi) who is currently the Executive Director of the Bellingham YWCA; Theresa Sheldon (Tulalip) who is currently Secretary to the Tulalip Board of Directors as well as the President of Quil Ceda Village; Gail Morris (Nuuchahnulth) who is the Program Manager for Seattle Public Schools Huchoosedah/Title VI Native Education Program; and Cecilia Firethunder (Oglala Sioux) who became the first woman president of the Oglala Sioux in 2004 and currently is a strong advocate for Native women and passing on culture through language preservation. Congratulations to all these incredible women and thank you for your decades of ongoing service to Native communities!
